Various Bugs...

I *think* these were taken just after I came out of hospital - but I could be wrong. Sadly they weren't all in the best of settings - not a lot I could do about that - but they're pretty plain backgrounds at least!

1. Snails!

2. Garden Tiger Moth

3. Garden Tiger Moth again

4. Buff Tip Moth - looks like a twig!

5. Magpie Moth

6. Some little buggy fly thing on one of our plants this morning

Re: Various Bugs...

Yep, last one, colour is nice but the insect is a bit non-descript. The others are a bit routine for me Laura simply because I know you have done some excellent stuff to a high standard before and these are not up to that level. They look just lit up with harsh flash and the white wall. Sorry if it sounds a bit critical but I know what you can do and mean that in the best possible way.

Re: Various Bugs...

Prefer the full view Tiger Moth to the front facing one.

Buff Tip is nice, but as you said, some of the backgrounds aren't brilliant, and I think it would have looked nicer on a more natural background. Having said that, if you try to move them they tend to fly off so you don't have too much choice!

Last one is the best of the lot as it's a bit different, and I love the effect with the plant

Re: Various Bugs...

Thanks all - totally understand and agree with the criticism! My problem is I never seem to see any fantastic moths anywhere other than in fadnig light, in my parent's porch! All of them were taken either on the wall there or the dor (the buff tip). So no, the backgrounds are rubbish - and because I still haven't got a separate flash the integral flash was used, and it is a bit harsh on them!

Still - they make not too bad record shots I thought, and I know Karl quite liked them (he's trying to build up a collection of bug photos )

The last one I really liked - I know the bug is nonedescript - but that was my intention. Everywhere I look people go on about how wildlife in its natural environment is so much more pleasing to look at - and I thought I'd try it with bugs. Whether it works is another matter . I deliberately didn't try the extension tubes though - and this little fella was so small this was the closest I could get really without them.

Thanks for the constructive help guys!

Re: Various Bugs...

Like every photo taken, the viewer cannot see the conditions the photos are taken under, for example light/place taken etc.
Sometimes there is only one option due to the surroundings/obstructions, other times one has to get a quick snapshot at the moment or the oppertunity has gone.

So bearing that in mind picture no3 is the one I think is the best.

Re: Various Bugs...

I understand that point Bazza, sometimes you have to grab what's there. I have loads of shots like that filed away probably never to be seen again. I also do loads of close ups of certain objects and they are simply records of whatever it is.

I think these are good record shots (with the exception of the last) and probably taken as great opportunities, ideal for Karl. He can see all the colours and probably allk the info he needs. However as they are up for C&C I'd look at the artistic factor, is it a great shot, what could have been better and on that basis don't feel they come up to the standard that Laura can produce or may be found elsewhere. Sounds a bit ruthless but intended with the best spirit and in recognition of Lauras capabilities. Of course I know damn all about insect photography...and some would say photography in general!

Re: Various Bugs...

I quite like no2 , like the shallow DOF, do really like the last one too, but as records of moths they are great xx You don't notice how pretty they are, until you can see the detail.
