Re: Can I abdicate from the USA?

Certainly no reflection on Bob's point but personally I think it's good to comment if people are inviting comment. I usually invite comment (or else state it's simply a pic of potential interest to people) and I have the flag set for C&C or edit. Some people post expecting comment without the C&C flag being set. I'd hate to see YoP getting snobby but I would like to learn stuff by seeing some technical details, how the shot was set up and it's good to get an opinion in a forum of friends. Bit hard on bob though when you post just for interest.

I have been doing photography for years, started back in the 70's as a teenager and joined a camera club. It was full of mainly middle aged men in V neck sweaters and most of the competitions were won by the same few judging and congratulating each other. The advanced group rarely conversed with the beginners but we all had to know they had Hasselblads, Rollei's, Canon F1's and Nikon F2's! I found incredible that I was having pictures published at 15 or 16 in national magazines and yet I couldn't even win the local camera club competitions (beginners didn't beat advanced ever and a 16 year old boy wouldn't for sure). They prefered their haystack landscapes and portraits even though they all did them - conform or you don't belong! I eventually had some limited success in my group but really I grew to hate the snobbiness. Now I think about it there were No ladies...really. The only ladies were accompanying wives who made the tea and had to admire the old mans work! Here, I hope we have friendliness and constructive criticsm to encourage and improve people (if they want it) and of course praise when it is due.

Good on you Bob, you stick with us Brits who love you to bits!

PS. My pics sometimes tilt, I think it's my specs with my viewfinder, the grid helps but I don't think the D40/x has one?

Re: Can I abdicate from the USA?

It's hard to believe this old thread I posted months ago was resurrected and is causing such a fuss. I'm not on any ego trip here. I welcome comments from pros and novice photographers alike. Some of the comments today were made months after the intial posting and have nothing to do with another forum's comments regarding my photograph.

Let's not get to the point where everyone responds to a post in two word replies for fear of offending. If you've noticed I try & explain what it is I like about a posting and I might even make a suggestion on how it might work better. Very few "Nice photo" replies from me. So, let's get back to making beautiful images and helping each other learn, please.

Re: Can I abdicate from the USA?

I pick up more tips every time I visit this forum.

Spirit levels for cameras eh???. No wonky horizons when I start posting images then.

I would welcome technical advice and helpful comments and even be pleased to be told where someone thought I had gone wrong in any regard to the shot.

Might be a while though.
Most evenings I cannot even view images on the forum let alone post them.

Re: Can I abdicate from the USA?

I'll admit to resurrecting this thread. I thought the original posts made some pretty strong points, and hopefully, resurrecting it may help us 'newbies' who havent seen the thread, consider those comments so that we can be as constructive and honest about what we see as is possible without causing offence. I've learned from bitter experience no matter who innocently words are typed in a forum, they are very often not accepted in the spirit intended, or at worse, totally misconstrued.

I, like BC, would like to see more detailed comments where possible, both in posting (yeah yeah, I'll try it myself!) and also in the feedback. I assure you I wont take offence.

HM: Yup ... I have one eye about two inches higher than the other (when I look through a viewfinder!!!) without a SL my flat landscapes would look like your fells!

Gutted for you about dial up....... youre missing out on some good stuff on here.

Only trying to help, sure you have your reasons, but just a suggestion... should be able to get 45k plus out of a phone line and a 56k modem is cheap, a HSDPA 3.5G 500Mb of data connection on my mobile is £7.50 extra a month and much faster than home dial ups, broadband even at 8mb speeds can now be a monthly contract. No offence intended just wondered if you had any other options available to you.

Isn't broadband in your area yet? I don't think I could cope without it now

Broadband is probably going to be cheaper than dial-up too, well worth looking into it.
