Don't blame you taking some pics of them, they are lovely, I hope they get sorted out soon.
There are a lot of breeders here in the UK, but yes, I believe they did originate from the US. They're fairly easy to care for to be honest. You just need a good vivarium, with water, and be able to cope with giving them 'live food'. They don't suffer much from diseases or parasites, but if their water gets poluted then they could suffocate since they breathe through their skin. Handling can also cause an issue too, due to chemicals left on your hands etc.
