Re: Canon 5D replacement

I'm sure they have been viewed a million times but here are the main features of the 5d MKII anyway

21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor
DIGIC 4 processor
ISO range expandable to 25600
Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording
High-res 3.0” VGA LCD with Live View
3.9fps JPEG shooting up to card capacity
9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points
Magnesium alloy body

It also has AF microfocus adjustment, Auto ISO (100-3200) - normal ISO 100-6400 and ISO can be expanded to H1 12800, H2 25600 and L1 50.

I would have prefered a low ISO 25 rather than a high unusable 25600 and I would have liked the FPS to be a little faster as well but, of course, they did not design it as a sports cam. It still suits me and I'm very excited by it so far except for the price. The HD movie mode looks very impressive indeed, click here to see some sample movies of the quality footage and bokeh on these clips. I think I will use the movie mode on occasions but will probablly soon forget about it after a while. So far the sample images look impressive for a pre production model, so I'm sure it will be a great camera when released on November.

Hopefully, the £2,299 asking price will drop when released, otherwise I will just wait a few months then buy.

I've just checked RGB and they now have it listed for £1799.99 inc. VAT much more reasonable price now.

Re: Canon 5D replacement

Why is it only 3.9 fps ? - Is affected some way by the MP count & full frame ?

Also the 9 point AF - Seems a bit skimpy ?

I guess the 3.9 is partly affected by the 21.1 Mpixel, maybe a marketing thing too (1Ds is very close in price) *I'm talking about the Mk111 £2,500 one)

9 Point AF, I only use 1 point AF, the point I choose. There are 6 other hidden points too.

As for the RGB price, nice find, has anyone bought anyone from them?

When you compare the 5d MKII specs with the £6000 1ds MKIII you can see that the 5dmkII is very similer and even better in some features appart from FPS, Focus points and metering.
So in anwser to your question, I think they would be many upset mkIII users if Canon pushed the FPS and focus points of the 5DMKII to match the MKIII. The 1ds mkiii has problems with its pro af, so, maybe canon has stuck with a safe af system

For a FF cam of this spec and price you really cant expect it be a one for all. It has clearly been designed for landscape, portrait and studio work. Thats not to say it won't be any use for bird/wildlife /sport photography, it still has 4 frames per second which should still be good enough for capturing these types of pics, and if the af has improved over the original 5d then there should be no probs at all.

The 1D Mark III is very close in price (not the 1Ds Mark III). However I expect the 5D Mark II to drop from the SRP, no camera is ever bought at that price.

Yes it does have very similar specs to the 1Ds, for wedding/landscape/portrait photography I think this will be an excellent camera

Is this not only 3.9 FPS at Medium res JPEG though? This rate will obviously drop if you are shooting RAW (or RAW+JPEG as I do).

No, this is the FPS at RAW. You may find it goes up with JPG, especially as the buffer can handle 380 images in jpeg mode.

Hmmm, in DJ's post (which has the spec's on) it states 3.9fps JPEG shooting and I was sure I read somewhere that it was only medium format JPEG.

What is says is...

The EOS 5D Mark II offers continuous shooting at 3.9 frames per second. When shooting JPEGs to a UDMA card 'COMMA'

Re: Canon 5D replacement

I take that as 3.9 fps jpeg providing the card can be written to at that speed ?

In other words 'up to' 3.9fps

If it was quicker I'm sure they would make sure the spec stated the fastest possible scenario.

It will definately be no quicker, normally the FPS is the same (for RAW and JPEG), I was just thrown by it stating 3.9 FPS JPEG as this indicated to me the RAW was not 3.9 FPS.

Does anyone know what the buffer for RAW is?
