Re: Paal Portrait

Lol, I always get the feeling when you post Tommy that people are a wee bit cheeky about your images, I'm not sure why as they're always fab! I love this, I love film, I love slide film - keep it up, I always check out your threads

Could you qualify this with some examples?

As far as I could tell on this image, everyone was fairly positive, apart from the two who mentioned the background, but even then, they still liked the shot.
We had a similar discussion yesterday. If someone posts an image in the Critique Request section, then that image is open to scrutiny from other members.

So, you said his images are " always fab ". Does that mean that if someone doesn't think they're always fab, and points out why he or she doesn't think they're always fab, that they are then in some way being " a wee bit cheeky "?
I agree or course, that there are indeed good ways and bad ways of letting someone know that you didn't really like their photograph for X,Y & Z reasons, but I find it strange that you decided to post that comment on this thread, where like I say, the comments were generally positive ones.

Re: Paal Portrait

I have to say I haven't seen any cheeky ones myself. Compared to other sites everything is extremely mild on here thankfully.

Re: Paal Portrait

Have to say I agree with MD, Lorna - I personally feel, if someone asks for C&C they deserve to get it! If they don't really *want* C&C they shouldn't ask for it! If someone asks for C&C, be they seasoned pro, bit of a chancer or absolute novice - I will personally respond in the same manner to all of them!

I wish I could say the same for myself.
I think the nature of our criticism depends on who we're criticizing.

Without it being " cheeky " , I think people may feel that Tommy, as a professional photographer, can handle a critique which is bold, sometimes harsh, but always honest and to the point, whereas someone just starting out in photography may be put off for life from ever picking up a camera again if they have a few negative comments directed at them.
It's always best to be honest with someone, but like I said earlier, there are good ways and bad ways of giving advice, and I think that advice should always be delivered appropriately, depending on who you're directing it to.
I mean, let's face it...none of us are experts here, are we?
And all we can offer is our opinions.

I joined Yo! as a brand new photographer, desperate to learn as much as I could from other people who share my passion, and in turn, share anything I've learned with them, but I was soooooooo nervous the very first time I posted an image here, incase the comments were so bad, that I would just hang up my camera and go do something else.
I'd hate that on my conscience, if something I had said to someone, in good faith, made them give up photography, or at the very least, put a huge dent in their confidence.

I think it's always best to know who you're giving advice to, and gauge if that person will crumble into a withering wreck if that criticism is brutally honest.

Anyhoo....

I didn't mean to hijack your thread Tommy, so I'll get back on topic.

I said it my first post, and I'll say it again.

Nice clear, crisp image. I like it a lot.

Re: Paal Portrait

Once again I agree completely with you MD - and I did mean that, but never get across what I mean properly! Having said that, if someone asks for C&C I will always *try* to give them something to work on, if I can!

Re: Paal Portrait

Lol, I just find a lot that people are critical of Tommy when with others they are not so much, thats just my opinion, wasn't having a go and was making a sweeping statement that his images are always fab, I haven't seen one that I don't like as of yet, that was all I was saying, wasn't getting at anyone!

I think that is true, but I think is because
1. he requests C and C (which not many others do)
and 2. our expectations of his work are high

As MD pointed out how you respond to beginners and pros is and should be very different.

I think I'm used to everyone being responded to in the same way at uni, everyone is given THE most critical eye possible, which doesn't seem to be evenly spread on forums. I'm not being harsh to anyone, was just saying that I don't offer critique unless I know that I could have done better myself.
