The Milller

I probably ought to have posted this in the "men at work" thread.

Here's a quick grab of my friendly neighbourhood flour merchant at work in his windmill, weighing out the goods. I’ve quad toned the shot in Photoshop and added a border but not sure whether the post processing works well. Constructive critique would be much appreciated

Re: The Milller

I think it's great too and was gonna say maybe just sharpen it a little? (You usually need to anyway when reducing in size for the web).

Agree with the others - a fantastic shot! Looks a bit like a Vermeer painting!

Re: The Milller

Lovely image with a period feel to it. Love the lighting and the composition.

If you want constructive critique, the only things I'd suggest are that its neither sharp nor soft enough to be 'soft filtered', and a slight raise in levels might improve the contrast between highlights and shadows. But no great dramas - its a belting picture.

Re: The Milller

Wow, what encouraging comments and suggestions – thank you very much!

Black Cloud, this genuinely wasn’t set up but given that the shot appears to have potential I’m considering going back and doing just that. I’d get rid of everything modern from the scene for a start, like the thermos jug, marker pen just in front of that and the flour bags in cling film. I think the broom handle is distracting too.

A confession to make Azz – I don’t know how to add borders with text in photoshop and did a quick botch job in Publisher. Exported back as a PDF into photoshop then cropped from A4 to give the image I posted. Maybe this accounts for the softness?

Any decent shot I take tends to be a happy accident Zoundz but just this once I actually achieved what I set out to do which was capturing the miller “Vermeer” style (see the pic below which was set up). I’ve been studying the Old Masters recently and looking in particular at the way they used light. Taken at ISO 3200 hence the noise.

Thanks for the advice Jack Russell – here’s the image I pasted into the PDF. I made an alpha channel edge mask to sharpen the lines of the window frame then converted to lab colour and did a two pass sharpen in the lightness channel. It still looks soft to me! I’ll try experimenting with the levels as you suggest and see if it improves matters.

Re: The Milller

the ISO 3200 noise can be easily removed - do you have Nikon Define 2.0?

No, but I recently bought Noise Ninja. I've not really used it yet though - still working my way through the instructions!
