Re: Grimes Graves, Santon Downham and the garden.

Grimes Graves is a site which once contained over 400 Neolithic flint mines. It produced some of the best flint available for arrow and axe heads etc. People still get flint from the area for their flintlock pistols and rifles.

Re: Grimes Graves, Santon Downham and the garden.

Not a huge amount to see except the one excavated pit and the very undulating landscape where the 400 odd pits are. However Stone Curlews are sometimes present and there were loads of Skylarks. The museum was very interesting.

Ah! Now I know what the set is. Unless I am mistaken that is a Lily beetle, and about 1/3 the size of the Chafer

Re: Grimes Graves, Santon Downham and the garden.

I dunno, I'm sure I remember that all beetles in the UK used to be black and run like the clappers when you disturbed them, and if you trod on them they smelled bad... When did the Clothes Show take over the coleoptera world?

Re: Grimes Graves, Santon Downham and the garden.

Didn't take my bins but quite a few birds around. According to the guide there they sometimes have Stone Curlews. Saw Buzzard and Skylarks.
