Do I or don't I get a Nikon D700 (my rambling)

I am going to ramble on a bit as I can't make up my mind.

Still seriously considering getting another camera to compliment my existing one. At the moment I am using a Nikon D300 (now no longer being produced ). Thinking about a Nikon D700 which is better for low light situations. All my lenses are really made for a FF camera so no extra cost there its just a question of can I justify spending the £1800 it costs. I also have a "grip" (extra battery holder) which will fit either for faster frames per second when shooting. The cost is not a problem I can afford one, but do I really need one?
Any new model in the future may not take that particular grip, and this is a worry as I have even upgraded that to a total cost of around £6/700 pounds worth of gear, the batteries alone are just under £100 each (en-el4a) and I have 2 of them+ 3 other "normal" batteries all will fit either camera .
One advantage of having two cameras is being able to have a greater shooting range than having to keep swapping lenses. Digital Single Lens Reflex ( DSLR ) cameras are prone to dust getting on the actual sensor every time a lens is changed. These two models have to a degree a sensor "wipe" its actually vibration to keep dust off but only works to a certain extent. I can and do my own " clean " as I have professional gear to do it with.

So do I buy now and use what I have that is suitable and built for , or do I wait and see if Nikon bring out a better upgrade camera as a replacement? yes they do more expensive models one being the D3s but takes movies as well costing another £1000 and the D3X at around £5000 but aimed for studio type work mainly.

The shop sales don't include such items so there is no need for me to go panic buy, its a case of I want one but do I need one. So anyone that has gone from a D300 to a D700 I would dearly like your opinion.

Its a no brainer for me Bazza, buy what you can use now, technology is ever changing so it will constantly change, you will have a second (spare) camera in case of a problem occurring. It uses all you existing kit.

All my cameras are considered old tech, they still take good images, of course if money was no object i would like newer stuff, but lenses are more important to me, i expect to change my cameras from time to time. The only question you need to consider, will it do the job you want, now ?.

Hi Bazza

I don't know Nikon very well, but from what I've read posted about the D700 it is one terrific FF camera.

What I would say, if you can afford it and you enjoy your photography it's a no brainer, go for it. The waiting game goes on for ever with tech gear, as Brian said in the post above.

A FF camera will complement your crop body and you'll always have a backup at hand.

If your like me and have your roots set back in the film days, It's really great getting back to lenses working at there normal field of view (focal length), also (if like Canon) you will love the bigger brighter view finder that comes with FF.

I could never go back to not having FF. I'm sure you will love it

Re: Do I or don't I get a Nikon D700 (my rambling)

I'll just echo what Ken said Bazza.

The two key points are whether full frame is going to suit you and obviously the cost implications.

When Nikon released the D700, Canon had the 7D and 5D2 on offer - both were very much aimed at different markets. The 7D was a 'cropper' with fantastic autofocus and the 5D2 was a very high res full frame offering which (with that lush landscape sensor) was a bit slow for the wildlife.

I think I started a thread ages ago whereby I said that if the Nikon D700 was a Canon I'd have bougt one. It offered less of either but a bit of both if that makes sense ?

I wasn't prepeard to put all my eggs in one basket with Canon so the 7D & 5D2 remained on the shelf yet having invested in lenses wasn't prepared to go back to Nikon as I'd sold all my Nikon gear a few years prior.

Nikon went the other way and comprimised, held back on the fine resolution of the 5D2 and held back on the speed of the 7D to make a fantastic 'all rounder'.

I know things are changing but in your shoes (a Nikon man) - without the added headache of the lenses to worry about and the 700D about to become even more affordable - it would be a no brainer for me esp when you're not needing to cash in on your crop body.

I would hang on and see if prices come down when the D800 comes out. Mind you, be careful - if you want to buy new, you may not be able to get one... I had that trouble with the D300/D300s
