JPEG or TIFF ?

Im currently archiving most of my slides and some negs, Im saving them as TIFF files because I believe they are better than JPEG as JPEG can lose info due to constant opening and closing its file (is that correct btw ? )Anyway I have noticed Photobucket wont allow you to upload TIFF files only JPEG, so which is best for storing then ?

Re: JPEG or TIFF ?

I'd store as TIFF and convert a copy to JPG the ones you want to upload.

Mine are all stored in vaults on my external HD but mine are automatically created in Aperture so i can't tell you what they are stored as... not really much help am i

Re: JPEG or TIFF ?

Keep you original tiff file Stewie, do a copy and save as .jpg then upload to your host site.

The tiff files are massive anyway and they won't upload to PB.

Re: JPEG or TIFF ?

Tiff are better quality

There is no loss on opening closing of jpegs. The loss would only occur if you kept saving it at a lower compression rate each time you opened it.

Re: JPEG or TIFF ?

I agree, keep the TIFF on your PC and convert it to a JPEG for hosting. Make sure you leave the save quality as 100% (or best) when you save though, else there will be a noticable difference in the quality).

Re: JPEG or TIFF ?

As Azz says - Jpegs don't degrade as you open and close the image - as long as you don't save them each time at a lower resolution....

Re: JPEG or TIFF ?

I only scan the odd print these days but my scanner defaults to TIFF.

It's normally because I want an old dog picture for Dogsey so I'm not over-fussed about the quality.

The TIFF file generated is HUGE so I normally open it, save a JPEG and blow away the TIFF.
